16. Fr.J. PAUL (1984 – 1997)
Fr.J.Paul was born on March 26, 1950 at Nellithope, Pondicherry to Mr.John and
Mrs.Therese. He had his seminary formation in Cuddalore and Bangalore during
1967 to 1972. He was ordained priest on May 9, 1978.
He served at Neyveli as assistant parish priest for one year and came to Petit
Seminaire in 1980 as director and served in the same capacity for four years
and became principal of Petit Seminaire in December 1984 and for the next 13
years he continued to guide the destiny of Petit Seminaire.
With Fr.Paul the school stepped into the modern era. He opened the computer
centre with two labs one at main school and the other at the nursery school.
He increased the sections in the Higher Secondary classes and extended the
Chemistry and Physics labs in 1986. He added the second floor to the Infant
Jesus block in 1990. In memory of Archbishop Mgr.Selvanather’s sacerdotal
golden jubilee, he built the Golden Jubilee block in 1991 and added first
floor to it in 1993 and called it PTA block
As a Sesqui Centenary memorial of the school a fiber glass board basket ball
court at the cost of Rs.2.25 lakhs in the main school and a two- in- one
structure, a stadium cum class rooms was raised in the primary school campus.
For these constructions subscriptions were collected from the students at the
rate of Rs.100, 150 & 200 respectively.
He founded the diocesan coaching centre in the school to coach higher
secondary students for the entrance examination conducted by various
professional colleges.
As a welfare measure for the staff, the annual increment, arrears, annual
bonus, EL encashment, gratuity, pension, family pension, EPF, CCA, HRA, Health
Allowance and Children’s educational assistance were extended and a new
housing colony near 100 ft road which bears his name was bought for the staff.
The strength of the school at the close of the sesqui centenary year 1996 was
6169 and there were 194 members in its pay roll.
Fr.Paul also held the posts of secretary of AINACS, Secretary of board of
education, member of the text book committee of Matriculation board, secretary
of Private schools association etc. He did all that with the same commitment.
He moved to US for studies in June 1997. Coming back from US in 2002 he was
appointed principal of Pope John Paul II college of Education and till date he
continues to serve the same institute.
